Eleanor looked around the long conference table at the men gathered there. She knew this meeting had been coming for some time and yet she could feel her parents’ disapproval as well as Phillip McNamara’s.

“Thank you all for being here,” she said as she stood and cleared her voice. “As you all know, my parents were founding attorneys at this firm. Upon their death they put senior partner and managing attorney Phillip McNamara in charge. I now have that position.”

A couple of the attorneys moved restlessly. Others stared at her, appearing half-afraid of what she was going to say.

She knew what she wanted to say, but she couldn’t walk away that easily. “There are going to be some changes. For starters, we’re actively going to hire more female and diverse attorneys. I’ll be staying in charge of the firm until the changes are implemented and I can manage things with an occasional in-office visit. That means some of the other senior partners are going to have to step up.”

“You’re leaving the firm?” one of them asked.

“Not leaving. I’ll still be keeping track of what’s happening here—just not from the managing partner’s office down the hall. I have a list of potential candidates whom I’d like to see in this firm. I’ll be sitting in on final interviews.”

She looked around the boardroom and saw resignation as well as disfavor.

“We don’t really need any personnel other than replacing you and Phillip,” one of the senior partners said.

“I’ll be offering some suggestions on replacing several of the attorneys recently brought into the firm,” she said. Phillip had liked it being an all-boys club. She thought of her mother, who would have done exactly what Eleanor was doing.

With that, she adjourned the meeting, walking out. She could hear the murmur of disapproval from some but nods from others. She smiled. Almost losing her life upstairs on the roof had made her even more determined to live the rest of her life on her terms.

When she reached her office, she found Willie Colt standing at her windows, Stetson dangling from his hand, his gaze on the city stretched out in front of him.
